Bastard Hemp

Bastard Hemp

Position: full sunSoil: fertile, moist, but well drained soilRate of growth: rapidFlowering period: July - AugustHardiness: fully hardyNative to Crete, Greece and the Hiamalayan Mountains where it grows along rivers in deep rich alluvial soil. Probably cultivated since the mid 17th century, when it was used for medicinal purposes and as a yellow dye source. Young plants grow rapidly to form a giant upright branching bush, whereon each flower spike is a broad pyramidal spire. Deeply incised foliage is arranged in opposite pairs, gracefully ascending the tall stems. Although individual flowers are subtle, appearing in July and August and greenish-white in colour, the overall appearance of this plant has definite 'star quality'! This plant needs plenty of expanding room, and is therefore most suited to larger spaces where it will not overshadow its neighbours.Garden care: Plants can be raised from collected seed....more

Shrub Rose

Shrub Rose

Large, fully double, fragrant, bright crimson flowers, from July to September and greyish-green leaves. This repeat-flowering, shrub rose is the brightest crimson English rose currently available. To fully appreciate the charming old-fashioned rose fragrance which develops as the flowers age plant in a sunny border close to an entrance or path.Position: full sunSoil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: July to SeptemberFlower colour: bright crimsonOther features: excellent cut-flowersHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: Before planting shorten thick roots to 25cm (10in) and reduce top-growth to an outward-facing bud 8-15cm (3-6in) above ground-level. Plant during a frost-free spell, incorporating well-rotted organic matter and a balanced fertiliser into the planting hole. Ensure that the 'bud union' (the bulge at the base of the shoots) is 2.5cm (1in) below the soilAll our roses are field grown. In October/November they are dug up and potted. However, they will not produce any new roots until spring, so don't be surprised if the compost falls away from the roots when winter planting. Some suppliers send out 'bare root' plants unpotted, but we don't as it is easier to manage them on the nursery in pots....more

Camellia

Camellia

A lovely bi-coloured flowering Camellia with creamy-white petals edged in raspberry. It is originates from Australia and is named after the founding president of the Gardening Clubs there. The ruffled, informal flowers appear in late winter and will often continue through until late spring and really brighten up the dullest of winter days. This is a compact form of Camellia, which is also slower growing than some of the other varieties. It is salt wind tolerant so a good plant for coastal planting.Position: partial shade (but not east-facing)Soil: moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil (or ericaceous compost for container-grown specimens)Rate of growth: average Flowering period: February to March Flower colour: white with a deep rose edgeOther features: broad, glossy, dark green leavesHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: To prevent damage to the emerging buds and flowers protect from cold, dry winds and early morning sun. French Lavender

French Lavender

Position: full sunSoil: fertile, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: June to AugustHardiness: borderline hardyOne of the most eyecatching French lavenders, with fat flowerheads studded with tiny, bright cerise flowers, from which delicate, pale pink, upright flags emerge like butterfly wings and flutter in the breeze. The flowers go on for weeks from late spring among grey-green, aromatic, evergreen foliage. It looks wonderful planted en masse in a protected, sunny border where its heady fragrance can be enjoyed, or in a container. Like most French lavenders, this is earlier flowering than its English cousins, but associates well with them if you want to prolong the season of lavender in your garden. The flower-spikes are also a magnet for bees and other beneficial insects. In frost-prone areas it is best grown in a large container and over-wintered indoors. Garden care: Cut back the stalks after the flowers have faded to retain a compact shape. Carefully trim back in April, taking care not to cut into old wood....more
