Lawn Scarifiers and Dethatching Tips and Advice
Over the course of the year, dead leaves, old grass clippings, moss and other dead and decomposing matter proceeds to clogs up the spaces around your grass stems and roots, choking it of oxygen and decreasing drainage. All this debris is called thatch and the act of removing this is through a process known as dethatching or scarification...or simply put...raking. Raking an area as large as many lawn is back-breaking work but fortunately there are a number of mechanical raking machines out there which can be bought for the purpose of performing the scarification process for you.
Choose between a petrol scarifier or an electric scarifier depending on the size and topology of your lawn. For larger lawns, you might find it less hassle to go for a petrol-driven scarifier rather than going for an electric powered machine so you do not have to deal with the hassle of cords and extension cables.
There are some things to mention if you go the route of powered dethatchers and the most important is that it is very easy to over-do the raking if you are not careful. Your dethatcher will come with a variety of different height settings and if you set it too low, you will find yourself tearing up mud and grass as well as the thatch you are targeting! Set the de-thatching machine on one of the higher settings and run a pass over an out of the way patch of grass. If it doesn't bring up a satisfactory amount of thatch, then tweak the settings and try again until it does. Then you can get down to business.
A motorized dethatcher will rake somewhat more vigorously than you do and make a lot of mess in the process. After you have finished trundling the machine around your lawn it's time to clean up after it. You can buy scarifiers with collection boxes to help minimise this but it doesn't fully solve the problem. Prepare for a little extra manual raking to tidy up or simply put a leaf blower to work, blowing all the remaining debris into a neat pile for collection or vacuuming it up.
