This type of pump sucks water out of the pond via a hose and then pumps it along another hose to wherever it's needed. As the pump doesn't go in the water it can be used for taking water from difficult to reach places. The water is under much higher pressure than with a 'normal' pond pump so it's great for a high waterfall or long hose (i.e. for a stream).
