 | Knautia Position: full sunSoil: moderately-fertile, well-drained, preferably alkaline soilRate of growth: average Flowering period: July to SeptemberHardiness: fully hardyDeep crimson, pincushion-like flowers are held high on slender, branched stems from July to September. This popular, airy perennial brings long-lasting colour to a mixed or herbaceous border. It's best planted in a well-drained soil in full sun and supported with twiggy pea sticks, since it has a tendency to sprawl. Although it prefers alkaline soil, it will thrive in neutral soil, too. It is also a magnet for bees and butterflies. Garden care: Support with twiggy pea sticks or brushwood well before the flowers appear. Cut down to the ground in autumn. This plant is susceptible to powdery mildew. To help prevent this, mulch with well rotted manure or compost in autumn and keep it well watered....more

 | Oriental Poppy Position: full sun/part-shadeSoil: moist, well-drainedRate of growth: fast-growingFlowering period: May to JulyHardiness: fully hardyA really luscious oriental poppy with deep reddish-purple flowers in early summer and bristly, grey-green leaves. The silky, pleated petals of this popular variety have been compared to the faded silk of antique ball gowns. Although the flowers of all oriental poppies are ephemeral, they are easy to grow and each plant will produce several flowers. If cut back after flowering, they may even produce a second flush. Plant it in a sunny border, as part of a cottage-garden scheme, alongside grasses or late summer-flowering perennials, such as dahlias, which will provide interest when the plant has died back. 'Patty's Plum' contrasts particularly well with silver foliage plants. It will need staking, as it has a tendance to sprawl. Garden care: Cut back to ground level after flowering. Lift and divide large clumps in autumn....more

 | Perennial Phlox Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: fertile, moist soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: July to OctoberHardiness: fully hardyPhlox have always been country garden favourites for their delicious scent and attraction to butterflies and bees. This variety has trusses of fragrant, starry, pure white flowers with narrow petals, from July to October and slender, toothed mid-green leaves. This elegant perennial will tolerate full sun or partial shade, but all like phlox, does not like soil that dries out in summer. It looks wonderful in a cool planting scheme based on pink, purple and mauve. The stems need supporting in spring before the flowers appear.Garden care: Support with bamboo canes, brushwood or ring stakes before the flowers appear. Phlox are greedy plants, so apply a mulch 5-7cm (2-3in) deep, of well-rotted garden compost or manure in early spring. Shear off the spent flower stems to prevent re-seeding. If the leaves show signs of powdery mildew, cut down to the ground and dispose of the affected foliage, but do not compost it. Clear away the debris around the plant to reduce the chances of reinfection. Lift and divide clumps in autumn and spring....more
