  Preferred common name: Horse chestnut, conker The RHS Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a large deciduous tree, commonly known as Horsechestnut or Conker tree. The flowers are usually white with a small red spot they are produced in spring in erect panicles 1030 cm tall with about 2050 flowers on each panicle. Usually only 15 fruit develop on each panicle the fruit is a green, softly spiky capsule containing one (rarely two or three) nutlike seeds called conkers or horsechestnuts. Each conker is 24 cm diameter, glossy nutbrown with a whitish scar at the base.Bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (NovemberMarch).
