Angelica
 

  Position: full or partial shadeSoil: deep, moist, fertile, loamy soilRate of growth: average Flowering period: August and SeptemberHardiness: fully hardyA stunning, architectural plant that adds height and drama to a border.  Dome-shaped heads of plum-purple flowers appear on red-tinted stems in August and September and it has pretty, deeply cut leaves. Try it at the back of a sunny, herbaceous or mixed border, where the flowerheads will attract bees. It performs best in moist, fertile soil. This plant is monocarpic, so dies back after setting seed.Garden care:  To preventthe plant from self-seeding, deadhead after flowering. Even if you leave the seedheads, it tends not to self seed as freely as other angelicas, so needs to be replaced regularly....more

Japanese Anemone
 

  Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: moist, fertile, humus-rich soilRate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: August to OctoberHardiness: fully hardyA fabulous plant for brightening up the garden in late summer, this anemone grows in sun or shade and has masses of elegant, cup-shaped, white flowers on  tall, wiry stems from August to October. The leaves are vine-like, dark green, and semi-evergreen. These single flowered Japanese anemones are one of the plants traditionally associated with Japanese gardens, where theyre grown against dark rocks or in the shade of trees. Best in partial shade, theyre perfect for lighting up a dark corner of the garden, or at the back of a herbaceous border.Garden care: Cut back the stalks after the flowers have faded, and tidy up old dead leaves in March. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Avoid moving the plant since it resents disturbance. Where necessary lift and divide congested clumps in early spring....more

Turkscap Lily
 

  Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: well-drained soilRate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: June to JulyHardiness: fully hardyIn early to midsummer, tall spikes of nodding turkscap flowers in varying shades of yellow and peach appear above whorls of slender, dark green leaves. The flowers are strongly scented. This is an ideal variety for naturalising in woodlands where it will happily grow in the shade.Be warned, lilies are suspectible to a range of pests and diseases, including lily beetle, and as such can be high maintenance and may need replacing regularly.The RSPCA have reported that all parts of lilies can be fatal to cats, including the flower, leaves and pollen. Between August and March choose a sunny spot where the plant can keep its feet in the shade.
